Anderson's works have been commissioned by Fisk University in honor of its
100th anniversary, the National Endowment for the Arts in celebration of
the Bicentennial of America, the Berkshire Music Center, and the Fromm Foundation.
He has received awards from the American Music Center, the Rockefeller,
Dansforth, Mellon, and Copeley Foundations. Mr. Anderson was Composer -
in - Residence for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Shaw, conductor.
His compositions are published by the American Composers Edition, Inc.,
C.F. Peters, Carl Fisher and Bote & Bock in Germany. Columbia, C.R.I. and
Nonesuch have recorded some of his works. Anderson is also well known for
his orchestration of the Scott Joplin opera, "Treemonisha," which premiered
in Atlanta in 1972 and for the recording he conducted for the Smithsonian
Institute, Classic Rags and Ragtime Songs. He studied composition with George
Ceiga, Scott Huston, Philip Benzanson, Richard Hervig, and Darius Milhaud.
As a lecturer and consultant, he has appeared in institutions in the United
States, Brazil, Germany, France, and Switzerland. The composer holds honorary
membership in Phi Beta Kappa and has served on the board of many musical
organizations. An additional tribute to the composer has been the publication
of a Ph.D dissertation devoted to the analysis of his music by Bruce Alfred
Thompson. Dr. Thompsom is now working on a biography of the composer. Anderson's
opera, "Soldier Boy Soldier," was commissioned by Indiana University and
is based on a libretto by Leon Forrest. The composer served as Fletcher
Professor of Music, after serving eight years as Chairman of the department
of music at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Anderson has degrees
from West Virginia State College, Penn State University, and the University
of Iowa. He also has honorary degrees from the College of Holy Cross and
West Virginia State College. His best known works include "Squares," "Six
Etudes and A Fancy," "Five Bagatelles," "Chamber Symphony," and many others.
